The Justice Ball was started in 1996 by Randall Kaplan, and the first event held at the House of Blues was a sellout to a crowd of 1,200. Every year, this event sells out and to date has raised over 5 million dollars for Bet Tzedek—Hebrew for “The House of Justice.” The proceeds of the event goes directly to helping over 15,000 people a year.
The mission of Bet Tzedek is “Tzedek, tzedek tirdof”—Justice, justice you shall pursue. The organization provides assistance to eligible needy residents of the Los Angeles County, no matter what racial, religious, or ethnic background. The organization builds “a network of attorneys and others who stand up for those in need and when crisis strikes,” according to the site. As Bet Tzedek reports, “Over 24% of all remaining Holocaust survivors live in poverty,” and the counsel at Bet Tzedek helps to fight for legal compensations they deserve. (bettzedek.org)
