Abstract: Jews have lived in the Italian Boot and Islands for the past 2300 years, developing unique mechanisms of adaptation to a changing political, cultural and social environment. Three great moments of the Jewish presence were during the Roman Empire, the Rinascimento with its openness to humanistic ideas and the arts, and Italy's Risorgimento that brought the Jews their final emancipation and social achievement. After each stage of thriving came dark periods of decline following the adoption of Christianity by the declining Roman power, the Church's Counter Reformation and the ghetto, and Fascism and the Shoah. Contemporary Italian Jews live and operate within a complex mixture of unprecedented civil freedom and political opportunity, and hostility rooted in relentless religious, political and social prejudice. We shall explore some of the crucial moments in the relation between Jews and Italian society during the last 65 years, focus on present challenges, and try to uncover what lessons can be drawn for the future of this ancient Jewish community.
